Who's coming to Kudu?

A bushveld farm shows itself differently to a birder than to a stargazer, differently to a hunter than to a contractor on rotation. Pick yours — the place rearranges itself around you.

14-day biodiversity survey · Feb 2026

445 species — and counting

documented in just two weeks. Many more still to discover.

Five researchers. Fourteen days. Five hundred and seventy-eight hectares of unfenced Limpopo bushveld. Every dot here is a species recorded by sight, call, track, photo or DNA — from the glow-green Parabuthus scorpion under UV to the leopard caught on a camera-trap at the main waterhole. And that was just a two-week stint — many more remain to be found, and every visit adds to the list.

A day at Kudu Rest Camp

From owls before dawn to scorpions after dark.

Stay long enough and the bush teaches you its rhythm. Here's what one full day on the farm looks like — scroll through.

04:30

The veld inhales.

Long before sunrise, a Pearl-spotted Owlet whistles across the camp and a Crested Francolin answers from the marula. The kettle clicks. You step onto the deck wrapped in a blanket — the air is sharp, the stars are still out, and somewhere down at the waterhole, hooves are moving.

06:15

First light catches the horns.

The sky pinks behind the koppie. A kudu bull steps out of the shadow line, breath hanging in the cold air, spiral horns counting the daylight. From the camp veranda, you watch a hornbill family feed on the railing — tame enough that you stop reaching for the camera and just sit.

12:30

The heat presses in.

The bushveld goes still. Cicadas pulse against the sandstone. Game lies up under the marulas. You retreat to the pool, then to lunch on the deck — bobotie, salad from the vegetable garden, a chilled glass of white. Wolf the camp dog is asleep in the shade and snoring quietly.

16:45

The light goes long.

We pile into the bakkie for a drive. Dust on the road, a Pale Chanting Goshawk on a telephone pole, a small herd of eland drifting through the open bushveld. We stop at the bow hide for sundowners — gin, tonic, ice — and watch sandgrouse arrive at the water as the sun puts the hills on fire.

20:30

The night switches on.

Boerewors on the braai. The Milky Way arcs overhead — Bortle 2, no light pollution for fifty kilometres. A Fiery-necked Nightjar pitches the dark with its slow whistle. UV torch out: a Parabuthus scorpion glows electric green by the hide. The bush is awake again. So are you.

Your hosts

A warm bushveld welcome from Henri.

Kudu Rest Camp is Henri Van Vuuren's home — a 578 ha private game farm he's spent years restoring. He runs the place with a quiet kind of hospitality: honest advice, local knowledge, and a camp dog called Wolf who’ll most likely greet you at the gate. Come as guests; leave as friends who already know where the waterhole is.

Common questions

Everything you're wondering, answered.

no surprises at check-in.

  • Where exactly is Kudu Rest Camp?

We're on Ostrolenka Farm, a 578 ha private game farm in Limpopo, roughly halfway between Musina and Alldays. The Venetia Diamond Mine is 25 minutes west; Mapungubwe National Park is an hour north; Beitbridge (Zimbabwe border) is about an hour east.

  • Is the area malaria-free?

Yes. We sit inside the well-known malaria-free pocket of western Limpopo. You don't need prophylaxis to visit us — which is why so many families, researchers, and long-stay guests prefer this corner of the province.

  • Do you offer long-stay rates for contractors and researchers?

Yes. We specifically built the long-stay unit for rotating mine contractors and extended research teams. Weekly and monthly rates are significantly cheaper per night than short stays, and include weekly laundry. Message us with your dates and rotation schedule and we'll quote.

  • Is there WiFi, and is it reliable?

Yes. Free WiFi runs throughout camp and is strong enough for Teams/Zoom calls, remote work, and large file uploads. We know contractors and researchers need it to work — it's not an afterthought.

  • Can I self-cater, or do you provide meals?

Both. Every chalet has a full kitchenette and a private braai — self-catering is the default. On request we can prepare cooked breakfasts, evening meals, or packed lunches. Just let us know in advance.

  • Is the camp family-friendly? Are children welcome?

Absolutely. The whole property is malaria-free and the camp is secure, so kids can explore safely. The pool, firepit, and daily wildlife sightings are a highlight for younger guests. Our family chalet sleeps four comfortably.

  • Can I bring my dog?

Well-behaved dogs are welcome in some chalets — just let us know when you enquire. We have our own camp dog, Wolf, a brown Belgian Malinois-type who likes visitors.

  • What wildlife will I actually see on the property?

A five-researcher team documented 445 species in a 14-day survey on the farm in February 2026. Daily sightings commonly include kudu, eland, wildebeest, impala, steenbok, duiker, warthog, and baboon. Camera traps regularly catch leopard, aardvark, honey badger, and brown hyena. Bird lists build fast — 94 species on the survey alone.

  • Do you hunt on the property? Can I bring my rifle?

Yes, this is a working private game farm and we offer ethical, fair-chase hunting on request. Rifles are welcome (with documentation). Get in touch before booking so we can discuss species, season, and logistics.

  • How do I book?

Send us a message via the enquiry form, WhatsApp, or email with your dates, group size, and which chalet you're interested in. We confirm most bookings the same day. A deposit secures the dates; the balance is due on arrival.

  • What's nearby if I want to take a day off from camp?

Mapungubwe National Park (UNESCO World Heritage site) is an hour north — raptors, baobabs, and the Treetop Walk. Musina has full shopping and supplies 40 minutes east. Alldays is a quiet bushveld town 45 minutes west. The Beitbridge border crossing into Zimbabwe is roughly an hour away.

  • Is stargazing really that good?

Yes — we're effectively Bortle 2. No city lights, no airport, no major highway. In winter the Milky Way core rises directly over camp. Astrophotographers are welcome; we can arrange stable power for mounts and point you to the darkest spots on the property.
